Healthcare Issues

Imagine a life where every part of your day is defined, regimented, controlled by someone other than you. Where even basic decisions, like what to eat, where to go, or who to spend time with are denied you. For people with disabilities living in many residential facilities, this is the reality.

From the start, each of my twins, Roan and Lula, were different in every way. In 2010, Roan burst onto the scene with a garrulous yelp; his sister was shatteringly silent. The reason became clear in time.

I’m a woman. I’m physically disabled. And I’ve never been more scared than I am right now.

I sat there staring at my computer screen as the words “page not found” popped up on the White House website. My eyes did a double take and then my heart sank.
